The National Crime Mapping Conference was held March 26-27, 2003, at United Kingdom's University College London (UCL). The conference aims to build the credibility of location technology as part of a national agenda for crime mapping.
The event is organized jointly by the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at UCL, the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (also part of UCL), the Police IT Organisation and the Association for Geographic Information.
According to Professor Gloria Laycock, who runs the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, "Technology that allows the police to identify crime hot spots and plan operations is playing an increasingly important role in reducing crime."
Nottingham, United Kingdom-based blue 8 questioned the validity of crime analyses that are based on inconsistent or incomplete information and stressed the importance of accuracy in providing a picture of local crime trends to enable resources to be targeted in the most effective ways.
"Crime mapping should not be about producing colorful pictures," said Ian Sterritt, blue 8. "To effectively tackle crime, operational planning needs to be based on valid analysis, which has its foundation in accurate data. Forces must not overlook the importance of data integrity to accurately identify crime hot spots."
